Catholic priests interpret the Bible?
One of the major debates of the Reformation was whether the average people (not clergy) could correctly interpret the Bible.
What does the Catholic Church teach today?
Interpretations of the priests are still seen as the only ones to be trusted?

Private interpretation of the biblical doctrine is not the same as personal reading of the Bible for spiritual growth. The Catholic Church continues to protect the doctrinal interpretation of writing as a matter beyond the decision of individual readers, but at the same time, in the strongest language encourages the personal and private reading and study of sacred texts. If the inspired word is read in a spirit of faith and prayer, the Holy Spirit to protect from bugs and drive the reader to the true message of God for your life.
The key word here is "authority." Who has the authority to decide the correct interpretation doctrinal scriptures? Many Christians argue that this authority belongs to the individual believer. Catholics maintain that this authority was given by Jesus to his followers as a group of leaders who have, in other words, the authority to decide what is the saving truth and what is the norm of Christian life revealed in the Bible it the Church with its leaders.
An example may help to focus the point. In chapter 13 of John's Gospel, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper. Most readers will probably interpret gospel "wash one another's feet" as a symbol of service to others, to stimulate the love in action, or humility in doing good to others. "I do not need to wash their feet, literally, to meet Jesus, I do it by serving others. Okay, but who tells you to interpret the text in this way? There is nothing in the reading itself to indicate that Jesus did not mean a physical washing of feet physics. His authority to read the text so it is not from the Bible, but beyond.
The Catholic acknowledges. The Bible does not interpret the needs of himself, but a real performer. This, for Catholicism, is the community of believers, the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit through their leaders.
No, Catholics are very encouraged to read the Bible, we always have, at least in my life (In the age profile is an estimate only :-)) had 4 scriptures to church on Sundays and on weekdays and three lay people have has always encouraged the office hours (all writes throughout the day, during a day that pass through the 150 psalms, along with other readings (three readings of the mass included).
For my part, I have a lot of writing and was encouraged to do it memorized. Some other readers en masse to save their readings as well, which is more than I do. We are a church-oriented writing. most of the music or more than half the mass that we use only the script.
I have many Catholic friends who read the Bible daily and regularly, we are all laymen. I use the daily mass readings as a starting point or, sometimes, I pray the office hours (links below)
The Catechism of the Catholic Church Part 1, section 1 1, CHAPTER 2 2, ARTICLE 3, Subsection 3
111-114
Vatican II identified three criteria for interpreting Scripture in accordance with the spirit that inspired it. 78
112 1. Take special care "to the content and unity of all Scripture." Different as the books which compose it may be, Scripture is a unity because of the unity of God's plan, of which Jesus Christ is the center and heart, open since Easter. 79
The phrase "the heart of Christ" can refer to Sacred Scripture, which makes known his heart, before the Passion dosed, as the Scripture was obscure. However, Scripture has been opened since the Passion, and which have since understood that, consider and discern in what way the prophecies must be interpreted. 80
113 2. Read the Book "the living Tradition of the whole Church." According to a saying of the Fathers, Sacred Scripture is written principally in the heart of the Church, rather than in documents and records for the Church carries in her Tradition the living memorial of God's Word, and the Holy Spirit gives spiritual interpretation of Scripture ( "… according to the spiritual meaning which the Spirit gives the Church" 81).
114 3. Be attentive to the analogy of faith. 82 By "analogy of faith" we mean the coherence of the truths of faith among themselves and within the whole plan of Revelation.
Is private interpretation of the Bible condoned in the Bible itself? No, not (2 Peter 1:20). The interpretation of Scripture practiced by the early Christians or Jews? Once again, "NO" (Acts 8:29-35). The claim that people can interpret scripture is false. Even the "founder" of Sola Scriptura (Martin Luther), near the end of his life, he feared that "any milk that might be the next" was a new Christian denomination based on their "interpretation" of the Bible. Luther opened a "Pandora's Box" when he insisted that the Bible could be interpreted by people and that is the sole authority of Christianity. Why have not more than 33,000 different Christian denominations-Catholic? The reason is the "different interpretations of the Bible.
Can there be more than one interpretation of the Bible? No. The word "truth" is used several times in the New Testament. However, the plural version of the word "truth" never appears in Scripture. Therefore, there can be only one truth. So how can there be more than 33,000 non-Catholic Christians all claim to have the "Truth" (ie, the correct interpretation of the Bible)? In addition, not all non-Catholic Christians as individuals who claim "infallibility" when it comes to interpreting the Bible? Only the Catholics believe in the infallibility of the papacy as an office. What is more credible - an office from the conclusion of the infallibility or 400 million non-Catholic Christians who are unable to agree on the interpretation of Scripture all claim "infallibility" When it comes to interpreting Scripture, the non-Catholic Christians who claim the infallibility Pope. If you put two people from the "same" non-Catholic Christian denomination (ie, two Presybterians, two Lutherans, two Baptists, etc.) in separate rooms with a Bible and a notebook and ask them to write their "interpretation "of the Bible, the passage of passage, which should not produce exactly the same interpretation? If guided by the Holy Spirit, as the Scripture has said, the answer should be "Yes." But what really happened? History has shown that the answer is "No" Now, in the case of Catholics, the Church that Christ founded and is always (Matthew 28:20) interprets the Bible, as guided by the Holy Spirit (Mark 13 : 11) for the "sheep" (believers). The Church (not individuals) to interpret Scripture. In Catholicism, Scripture is for meditation, prayer and inspiration, rather than for individual interpretation to formulate doctrine or dogma.
If you are not born again and Spirit filled interpretation of Scripture should not be trusted. The Spirit of God takes in all the truth. All men are liars, but God is real. You know the true believers by their fruits.
20 Therefore by their fruits known.
Type.
To write anything, but what you can read and understand, and I hope you fully understand, as you have come to understand our part, we are your boast as ours, the day of (our) Lord Jesus . (2 Corinthians 13-14)
The second letter of Paul to the Corinthians was written around 57 CE All the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles and Revelation were written after Paul's letter, and may or may not apply to this statement.
The verse in 2 Corinthians would only apply to documents that Paul and other apostles had written so far.
The Jews had centuries of interpretation of Scripture for priests and rabbis.
In Acts 8:27-39: Philip asked the Ethiopian reading the prophet Isaiah, "You know what you are reading?" The Ethiopian replied, "How can I, unless someone instructs me?"
The original readers of the Epistles also knew Greek and all the slang and idioms used in their time. They knew (and lives) culture, politics, and habits of everyday life of the first century CE
If I knew the language that were written in the Bible, ie, Hebrew, Greek and some Aramaic, archeology, theology, then perhaps the church would not have to help me.
The Catholic Church can also deepen the richness of almost 2000 years of constant study of the Bible by the more intelligent and spiritual people of every generation. Why would I want to throw this treasure away?
Translations are also a problem. Something is lost in translation, no matter how good, how new, or beauty is a translation.
In a practical note, to be able to keep an eye on the overall picture has remained the Catholic Church, along with almost 2000 years now with over 1.1 million believers living.
Non-Catholic Christian churches to interpret the Bible any way they wish to maintain mutually fragmentation to the point where now there are over 10,000 non-Catholic Christian.
With love in Christ.
Why not them. Collected books to be included in his "Holy Bible".
>>> Are interpretations of the priests still seen as the only ones to be trusted?>>>
Oh, no, not at all. The Catholic Church does not teach that priests are the only ones who are qualified to explain or teach about Scripture.
Many parishes have Bible study classes, and not all of them are run by priests. There are nuns, religious sisters, deacons and lay people who are qualified to teach these classes.
Even among theologians theology with advanced degrees, not all of them are priests - in fact, not all of them are even men! Theologians who are "directly" by the Vatican, and they give a lot of help to the Pope in preparing his apostolic letters, etc..
Not all these people are priests, and many are still women. (This goes against the popular misconception that women do not have positions of authority or influence in the Church.)
.
The Bible clearly states that no private EXTREMELY interpret, so I imagine there would be a Catholic in this regard.
That, however, does not stop one from reading the Bible and intrepreting in their own way with regard to aspects of the Bible that the Church has no role in education.
(eg - the Catholic Church admits that he does not know whether to interpret the creation story literally or not, so it is left to the individual to choose)
One of the issues that emerged during the Reformation was called "Sola Scriptura". The idea was that everything necessary for salvation can be found in the written Word of God. The novel idea of reform was opposed by the Catholic Church, which insisted that there was also an important expression of God's Word in the life of the Church. This often is called "Tradition." The idea is that even the Bible itself does not say which books were to be included in the official listing. There are experiences of worship and community life that much of what the faithful practice: how to baptize, how eucharist, the approach of the authority. While the reformers emphasized the authority of the Bible there are obvious problems that erupted in the early decades of the 16th century noted that the ease with which people could interpret the Scriptures in private very different positions. Basic questions about the Trinity, the Person of Jesus, the necessity of baptism, and so were not small issues to be decided in private. Faiths were sanctified for use in churches, but they also are "creations" of the Tradition. The religious wars were fought across Europe depleting stocks and the polarization of people in positions that may or may not be right. Eventually many took to the idea that the Holy Spirit leads believers to understand what the real truth. The variety of denominations today still shows the danger of such a position. Because of printing invented in 1483 began to make the Bible available to the general public around the world became an authority. Catholics have used the Latin translation of the Bible made by Jerome in the 5th century as the final text. Greek manuscripts that circulated in the West after the destruction of the Byzantine Empire in 1453 by Muslims were used to correct some dark passages of Latin. Erasmus academic who became a Greek translation was used by both sides of the argument. The Catholic Church teaches that the written Word of God must be understood in terms of the experience of God unwritten. It was this experience that had developed unwritten scripture to begin with. Because most people could not read and most could not read Latin or Greek local pastors of both groups were the residents in what is believed. Catholic parish priests are obliged to preach on the essentials of the Faith as a way of clearly establishing what is the traditional faith of the Church. Protestant pastors use the Bible to present the teaching of each section. If a disagreement with a Pastor was allowed to start another congregation and what appeared to be further understood. Often, the scripts were used to argue (proof texts) a position.Only later in the 19th century that scholars began to lead the churches back to watch the whole Sciptures. Catholics are reluctant to interpret for themselves because of the dangers of the Reformation had become apparent. What the parish priest is taught often developed Catechisms of the Church of the Councils. Religious instruction began to improve as the clergy were better educated. Unfortunately, the religious wars of the 17th and 17th century there were many farmers on the whole issue. The Anglican crisis and the French Revolution started the faith of the people who do not even understand the conflict. Religion was privatized by the Enlightenment philosophy and excluded from public expression as a way to keep disagreements from the common life. The churches are often stripped of competence areas such as universities and hospitals and various charitable works. Protestant and Catholic leaders insisted on its themes of religion as they did. The dissidents were punished. America was populated with people from Europe to escape religious persecution. Unfortunately, the experience of the Old World continued in the new legislation was approved as the formal establishment of churches in each colony. Only after the revolution that these laws cease to bind despite the prejudices against those who held different. When increased Catholic immigration in 1840 the cause of famine and political turmoil in Europe, U.S. Balkanization is addressed. Ethnic communities sought to perpetuate their exclusivity here using the old language and customs. The local church is often the main place where this culture can be preserved and celebrated. The priests were the most educated and forward from their positions with authority. Culture and faith are intertwined so that one can not but one or the other. Innovation was discouraged and the pattern became the norm here. Only with the rise of the state of education and inculturization made a change to take place. Many of the best scriptural authority is not sorted people. Many of them are women. Many of them are minorities whose views hardly ever been considered. The authority in the Church was considered that there are lay people (not ordered), especially in its acceptance of formal education. When not ordered not to accept what appears to be the teaching of formal education was reviewed. Often, the cultural practices of Europe had become so entangled with Catholic teaching that people can easily confuse one with the other. Priests can the authorities in terms of preaching, but his is a very limited scope. The pope and the bishops can ennuciating the definitive truth of the Gospel. Each priest is acting in union with their bishop. When there is dissent can be confusing, study and, finally, acceptance of new ideas are tested in the Christian life. What does the Scripture of the first people who heard or who wrote it is often not clear. The essential truth about Christ is the standard that makes or breaks the interpretation of the Bible. Are you writing against what the Church understands Christ aout. I like the idea of using a medical book. Read one and you believe that you have all the diseases out there. You need a trained physician to determine what the situation is really medical. God sent us a person, not a book that should be the accepted norm for the life eternal.
if the whole world to read all the old and original sacred books in the world .. to know about the Coming of the Last Prophet Muhammad ..
In fact, the bishops gathered in a general council, as the Second Vatican Council, are the only ones authorized to interpret, and all others are expected to follow the general thrust of these tips. Others can teach. At present, the catechism was used for the source of the most common responses. Not everything is set. There are many controversies and differences of theological debate, but these are rather fine points of the average Christian is not usually affected by the death penalty is an example of such a dispute. The majority recognizes that the state has a right to carry out the death penalty, but many believe that a less violent course may be a more prudent option, while others argue that in our modern world where our financial resources are large and We are an enlightened people, a less violent course is necessary.
When I studied at a Catholic university, to present all points of view and, sometimes, for a and by whom they were favored. Favorite contestants today are still in the religious orders because they have the manpower and resources to pursue those questions.
No, the Catholic Church teaches that the Holy Spirit that teaches us to understand the Scriptures. He has always taught, but that many Protestants around the turn of the era in which people can get something finally let go of what was intended and the people have no access to Bibles — so the reading of Scripture little between. Actually I think all the laity to understand Scripture more than a few priests today.
The Catholic Church has made great strides in correcting some of its old mistakes and give them credit for that. They are taught that only those elected by God and who can interpret what the Bible says. It is simply not the case. Too many Bible verses state otherwise.
>> It is the interpretation of the priests still seen as the only ones to be trusted? <<
I do not think it was never the case, because we know that priests, bishops and even have fallen into heresy.
Anyway, this is from the Second Vatican Council:
"But the task of authentically interpreting the word of God, whether written or transmitted, has been entrusted exclusively to the office of teaching life of the Church, whose authority is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ. This teaching is not above the office of God's word, but only the teaching of what has been transmitted, listening to it devoutly, that the scrupulous monitoring and explain faithfully in accordance with a divine commission and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it draws from the deposit of faith everything that presents for belief as divinely revealed. "(Dei Verbum, 10) http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_counc …
The Catholic Church is the sole authority to interpret the Bible correctly. This is no different today as it was when she first wrote and canonized. If someone wants to see if the interpretation of private works, just look off. The Reformation led to the belief in a personal interpretation, as well as the multitude of names that do not believe or teach the same doctrines, although they all use the same Bible (the same one that came from the Catholic Church).
I read the Scriptures and interpret its meaning for me in that where I am in life and how Jesus' teaching can be applied, but when it comes to official doctrine, as the Trinity, forgiveness of sins through baptism, the real presence in the Eucharist, the divinity of Christ, etc, which depend on the Church, and join me on the drive with her.
God bless.
I did not know that even reading the Bible.
I've been going to the church for 27 years and never once heard a priest say that can not interpret the Bible. I have also heard that one can not talk to God and me that the only way to God is through the Catholic priest. I've heard otherwise.
It is true that they are there to help us understand God, but no more than an engineer to help us build our house. It is their profession and have been able to devote more time to study the extent that most people should be seen as the expert source.http: / / acatholicsperspective.blogspot.co …
yes, no one can correctly interpret the Bible and its interpretation of the Bible is based on the need for interpreters. However, the Catholic dogma is that only clerics can intemperate.
It is wrong to say that the priests interpreted the Bible to their congregations. Totally untrue. Our basic lessons remain the same for over 2 millennia. Doctrinal development has occurred over time have grown to understand more about the truth already revealed. Sharing the teachings of the priests who are new to them or do not know about them.
Catholics do not believe in private interpretations of the Bible, because the early Christians did not believe it. The Bible does not pretend to be the only rule of faith. The Church has existed for over twenty years before, even a book of the New Testament was completed. Several decades passed before the final was completed. Other books have been read in churches, however, the fee was not taken until the fourth century.
The printing press was not invented until the 15th century. Bibles were hand written with pen and ink are so rare and valuable that a parish can have a Bible and would be decorated with jewels and chained to the lectern, so no one is stolen. Even so, most people could not read at all.
Priests teach what is taught in the seminar to teach. They teach what they have learned in the knowledge that you've learned, "as Scripture. They are not allowed to teach their own opinions on matters of doctrine.
Yes, because the interpretations could end in fundamentalism and, in turn, become extremism. You could see this as the Vatican, the control of us, and it was during medieval times, now it is too make sure that extremism in the Middle Ages saw no repetition of the same.
Everyone is encouraged to read the Bible, but are also encouraged to ask their priests to the interpretation.
The Catholic church wrote the Bible, is the original meaning of the text dictated by the first apostles.
Think about it, one holy catholic and apostolic church there are 40,000 Protestant denominations believe in the heresy of all those who have the truth.
Jesus said you know my followers because they are one!
Catholics still clinging to what the Bible says about biblical interpretation. It is no private interpretation. Watch what happens when everyone interprets the Bible? Chaos. Christians attack Christians. Religious wars. Catholics and Protestants who were more than 30 years after the reform. We still have today in Ireland.
Listen please, if a person who may not have been truly born again by water and the Spirit (John 3:5), can not be trusted and should not even read what they have written.
The Bible was written, read over, which is what darkens my counsel, saith the Lord of host?
The RAC and all the other churches do not teach the correct gospel that God gave us, therefore have become the enemy of God.
You can do a big favor and avoid these places. Go to http://www.bjnewlife.org read and what kind of church that God approves and what kind of church he absolutely hates.
No, they do not teach that. Although most Catholics do not learn the Bible.
