How do you explain "papal infallibility" when the current Pope does not agree?
previous popes? … ie, the limbo and purgatory. If you are infallible, how is that not all agree?
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the Pope is infallible when he speaks of his position of authority over an issue or doctrine (speaking ex cathedra).

Papal infallibility is a doctrine, often misunderstanding of Catholicism (even within Catholic circles!).
Contrary to popular opinion, the Pope is not infallible says that every time he speaks. The Pope is still a human being with human interests and not spend 100% of their time talking about religious matters. There are two conditions for which a decree of the pope is considered infallible
1. * * The matter should concern faith and / or moral.
If the Pope is sentenced to a sports team, talking about the wonders of technology or even dabble in politics, his words are spoken in the ability of Mr. Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI as not).
It is argued by a number of Catholic theologians (post hoc, of course) that historical Bulas on the dynamics of planetary motion (see the scandal of Galileo), while seen by his contemporaries as infallible are, in fact, precisely because no * subject concerns or moral or faith (which refers to the science and cosmology).
2. The pope has the desire to define a * really * dogma. This is usually indicated by the Pope for using a definition. Phrases like "solemnly define" or "As a matter of Catholic faith and universal" are good indicators that the Pope is trying to exert * infallibility.
Now this does not mean a Catholic ethics can dismiss anything and everything a Pope teaches simply because they do not use the charism of infallibility. It is for all Catholics by default * * I trust the Pope in his teaching ability. Infallibility is simply the brand of dogma. Believe it or not, there are ways in which a Catholic who, through the conflicts of conscience can not believe some teaching may differ * from that teaching. Of course there are levels of authority associated with different types of education (and a parallel or opinion which is expected). However, the dogma must be accepted by all Catholics or (s) ceases to be Catholic.
Now comes the hard part:
How to determine which papal teachings are infallible and which are not?
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?) The Vatican has not published a comprehensive list of all states officially infallible. In fact, the determination of the fallibility of a papal decree is a very heated controversy among Catholic theologians.
There is a minimalist who only considers the two Marian dogmas are (obviously) infallible, an extremist position that sees nearly 350 papal infallibility decree (including those that are frankly anti-Semitic and anti-Democratic) and a number of positions.
You are correct in their observation that the popes have contradicted each other often throughout history (though his examples are, frankly, not to the point. Purgatorio has never been a doctrine of the Church). I wish more Catholics paid attention to our history as not to get caught in a mindset of the conservative "Whatever is said now Papa!"
It is taught by a series of historical popes that:
1. Jews are inherently guilty of "deicide" simply for refusing to convert after "kill Jesus."
2. Freedom of religion is a heretic.
3. Slavery is intrinsically amoral (neither good nor bad).
4. Usury (loaning money at interest) is inherently evil and a "serious condition contrary to natural law."
5. All sex outside of a direct way, procreative sex is gravely sinful (including sex between acquaintances, perpetually couples).
Now in the 21st century church, we are taught (even by our current Pope) that:
1. The concept of "deicide" is silly, unfounded and wrong. Jews, whether by stating that "killed Jesus" or are "intrinsically evil" is wrong.
2. Religious freedom is an innate human right endowed to us by our creator.
3. Slavery (all forms) is inherently bad.
4. Usury is not necessarily bad, only when a person operates a purpose through extravagant debtee interest.
5. Sex (including married men and women of course) do not necessarily have to be * objectively procreative sex as long as it still works as a means to unite the couple (ie, couples can marry and have sex).
Some of these can chalk up to a true organic development of doctrine, while others are more difficult to do so. * Some seem obvious changes in teaching which obviously raises the question: If a Catholic always agree with the current pope, even when it causes great distress and spiritual causes said Catholic feel as if (s) you are sinning?
I'd say, oh no!
I like to use this thought experiment:
Imagine that physicists found a way to go back in time, and a 21st century Catholics were to visit the 12th century Christianity. Now, during this time, the Catholic Church * was consistently anti-Semitic. Is this the Catholic travel time required to "accept what the Catholic Church teaches that" even though his conscience clearly 21st century
If you look carefully at the problems, you see that in reality all the potatoes are in agreement with each other on issues that fall under the infallibility. How do you think the potatoes are not in agreement in limbo and purgatory?
Might have made statements in private conversations or correspondence, but these lessons are not speaking "ex cathedra."
The doctrine of infallibility was proclaimed in 1870, but like any dogma, the truth contained in it has been part of the Catholic faith from the time of the apostles. You can see the primacy of Peter among the apostles in the area of doctrine in the New Testament, and all throughout Church History. The proclamation of a dogma does not change or add to your faith, but says that was something that is already in the faith, as Christ gave the Apostles.
Very good question - RAC says that the Pope was infallible "ex-chatedra" but also the late Pope speaks "ex-chatedra", huh?.
If you find an answer, please let me know too!
Have a blessed day:)
Who said that "the doctrine of papal infallibility has only existed since 1896" - But then, even more: this doctrine is from God? I doubt it!
Moreover, not all popes have agreed within the period indicated.
The Church has always taught as a doctrine Purgatory. Limbo has never been taught as doctrine, but has continued to theological speculation. I know of no disagreements.
The Pope has spoken infallibly only a couple of times in 2000 years, but the pope is impeccable. No Pope has spoken ex cathedra on purgatory or limbo.
God bless!
Fr Joseph
be infallible, it was half to be perfect as Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, how can the man Jesus was to be infallible? If one wants to say that the pope is Jesus on earth that make him a false prophet, the man can only walk in the Spirit of Jesus Christ and His Holy Word of God gives witch .. The Bible tells us that many false Christ walking on earth today. The Word of God - Bible proclaims that it is not being added to is taking away from. So Who is the Pope?
There have only been two "infallible" pronouncements ex cathedra from the doctrine of papal infallibility was proclaimed, they have to do with the Virgin Mary. Solemn rarely invoked authority, and for good reason.
what remains in the soil is kept in heaven
what is loosed on earth is loosed in heaven.
The first thing I thought. I hope that helps.
and thank God for that. I hate to be public executions of witches.

He is only infallible infalliblewhen said something that has happened only twice in history. The Immaculate Conception and the ascension of Mray in the sky.
the doctrine of papal infallibility has only existed since 1896 - 112 years. All the popes at the time agreed.
No papal infalliability. I would like to test inflammibility although Pope.
I disagree with papal infallibility.
Popes speak directly with God, so too much should change his mind
and no I do not believe that either.
All human beings are fallible.
The Pope can not be above Jesus and the Bible.
That's news. Limbo is an x-Chair statement?
na na I did not listen!
