Is There Any Passage In The Christian Bible To Support The Catholic Belief In “purgatory”?

I know this is not the religious section and that many of the regulars do not approve of religious questions, but have always wondered about “Purgatory” and from where belief in it is drawn but never get around to asking my priest…….
Any insights?

  1. -One Love- says:

Purgatory comes from Judaism (Jews believe in a place called Gehenna)…that’s why you usually hear people saying that ‘Catholicism fulfilled Judaism’. If you’d like to know more about it look up Gehenna and you’ll see.

    No.
The Catholic church invented “Purgatory”, it was a money making spin.
Families whose dead relatives were supposedly in Purgatory could then buy indulgences from the Church to “release” their dead relatives so that they may enter heaven.
Many think this to be the last straw which saw Martin Luther begin his campaign against the Catholic church - “Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences”, known as “The Ninety-five Theses”.

“…for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that there is, namely, Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay or straw, the work of each one will come to light, for the Day will disclose it. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire [itself] will test the quality of each one’s work. If the work stands that someone built upon the foundation, that person will receive a wage. But if someone’s work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only through fire.” (1 Corinthians 3:11-15)
There are others, but that is the most common one.
If you want to know more, just google it there are tons of websites on purgatory and the Bible.

There’s no biblical verse to support that belief….but to an extent this belief could make sense………”God will not condemn a soul in grace, however, He can not permit anything defiled in heaven, thus, if a soul in grace has yet to fulfill in justice some debt of temporal punishment, it does so in purgotory!!!

No there is not, there is no Afrikaans word for purgatory that I can think of, it is a Roman Catholic beliefhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatory according to Google. The word Purgatory is not found in the Bible

“Turniton” gave the most satisfactory answer, I do believe. Also, let’s not forget that Catholicism has never been Christianity anyway. Doubtful? Outraged? Just Google “Catholicism cult”

  7. Sydney Harbour says:

Not sure, sorry. I am not Catholic but I should start reading the bible. Purgatory is something most of us just believe is there, like Heaven.

I don’t know I think there would have to be for them to make that claim. But purgatory sounds alot better than hell
