General summary of city: Leuven (Louvain in French) is a university city and capital of the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University of Leuven) is the oldest Catholic university in the world. It is also one of the world's oldest universities. With regard to the adage "old is gold," the university that is the hallmark of Leuven is one of the most beautiful monuments in Europe. An ancient city of Leuven, the industry grew from 11th century onwards. The town soon became famous for the production of flax (lewyn known as then) by the late 15th century. Historians claim that flax is actually a corruption of the word "Leuven". In the 18th century, industry in the manufacture of beer came into existence. The city of Leuven suffered setbacks during the world wars and the university library was destroyed and rebuilt twice.
