No Time For A Catholic Confession?

I’m a Catholic with mortal sins on her conscience, and I want to confess, but I am unable to go to confession at the moment. Can I just say an Act of Contrition and beg God for forgiveness, or am I doomed to rot in Hell if I don’t get the official confession from a priest?

Such a sincere confession may be acceptable in a serious situation like death where you do not have an opportunity to receive the Sacrament but if you are in no danger it is insufficient and you can wait until you can confess.

Certainly it’s okay to do an Act of Contrition right this minute, but that’s not receiving the Sacrament of Absolution, so all it’s only a stop-gap measure.
It’s preposterous to claim you don’t have time for confession. Give me a break. It’s half an hour maybe, including travel time to the closest Catholic parish. If the parish in question has restricted confession times, then call ahead and make an appointment that DOES fit in your schedule.
If you really WANT to confess, you’ll find a way to make it a priority. If you can’t seem to do that, then maybe you don’t want to confess after all, and then of course, you have to consider how much that lack of prioritizing puts your soul in jeopardy.
Seriously, stop making excuses for yourself. You can give up a half hour or 45 minutes of SLEEP if you have to — it would be worth it to get these mortal sins off your conscious.

    Sound familiar
While I was born into the Catholic faith, I don’t feel Catholic at heart. I believe in God and Jesus, but I also believe that a lot of the Bible used symbolism. I believe that communion is symbolic of the body and blood of Christ, and I don’t pray to Saints. And I don’t think the Pope has any more power than other Christians. I believe in a personal relationship with Christ, not in confessing to a priest every time I sin. And I think that women have the same rights that men do. What type of Christian am I? Do I fit into a specific category?

Thanks so much to everyone who sent me advice. I realize now that I don’t need to be categorized–I’m a non-denominational Christian. And so long as I live a good life, believe in Christ, and love others as I do myself, even if I don’t take a weekly communion, who would be cruel enough to put me in Hell?

nobody is going to heaven or hell, but if you actually believe in catholicism, you should make every possible chance to waste (or spend) your time on getting into heaven.

  5. azreal20 says:

you need only confess to Christ and the almighty himself…A priest does not have the power to forgive..only christ does!!!

  6. caballer says:

YOu don’t need a priest. Jesus became your priest. You go directly to him. Confess your sin and believe that God is faithful and just and will forgive your sins.

  7. suddense says:

you can tell me, i am all ears. I have just as much authority to forgive sins as the guy behind the window. I may not be as amused as he is though.

  8. yournota says:

Ummm.. Cant you just ask Jesus to forgive you? Jesus is the mediator between God and man.. Not a priest..

  9. Karenita EWTN ((Allecat)) says:

just go to Confession as soon as you possibly can and until then do not partake of the Eucharist.
