What is the difference between Protestants and Catholics?

I've been reading about the Tudor period in history and I only read about Mary, the first restored back to England and got rid of Roman Catholicism to the Protestant faith. What are the differences in these two? Beliefs? How are the same and how are the same?

  1. I think therefore I am 2210 says:

As far as I am concerned Christianity is Christianity. I see no reason why there should be many sectors of Christianity, when the core beliefs are the same. To answer your question, but I do not really know the difference.

English Protestantism was initially difficult to distinguish from Catholicism. Principles of English proestatentism rejected the authourity of the Pope, apparently replacing it with the Archbishop of Canterbury. The church hierarchy is available in both, and still is.
Other differences include the true prescense, the belief that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist vrs. Christ is present symbollicly. The gap grew even more when Elisabeth gained power, and had a new prayer book created; also banned the Catholic version.

      Not again.
Almost anyone could read in the times of Tudor England read and understand the Latin. It was not much of the burden of Latin Bibles. The reason was the entire Bible, is translated twice before because one of the readers to read Latin was seemingly useless (which resulted in the Mass, while in many cases), the other reason is that the translation of things tends to change slightly meanings and can eliminate some things simply because of differences between languages.
First English Church approved Bible translation was done in 1525. Before that a few books of the Bible has been translated into the vernacular with the Catholic Church approval. (first performed by Beda the Venerable in the 8th century)

David, but not too close. Catholics argue that the church tradition and the Bible are the same fundamentals of the faith. This is because the tradition is older than the gospels. The Pope is considered the successor of Peter, who is not considered deifyied by any stretch of the imagination.

Dr. Bob's response has too many problems in their direction.
They do not believe in the divinity of the pope and saints canonized and use the intercession of saints, sometimes, when to pray and ask for special things that the saint you are calling may have in their bag of good that are made things for him that helped him get canonized.
This question can not be answered in few words, because after the Protestant Reformation, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin and myriad others, there have been many breaks in many of these groups forming new Protestant sects.
There are few who can tell the theological differences in the literally thousands of sects, if in fact there is any theology involved.
Christianity is Christianity, and only means to live a life like Christ and follow his advice on how to treat others, the rest of the garbage comes from St. Paul and its often confusing comments made to the various congregations who wrote at a time or another.
In my opinion, you can rip the Old Testament and the book that part of the new test will consist of works of St. Paul, Revelations, and a couple others that are after the book of John. Christ's message is included in the often contradictory statements, including, of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The extent to which the Anglican Church and the Lutheran Church is concerned, there are differences between their beliefs and those of the Roman Catholic, but close enough to it to justify a move to recombine them into a Catholic church.
The word catholic means universal when it is written in lowercase, uppercase, it refers primarily to the church in Rome. However, there are many other Catholic churches.
There are a multitude of what I call "a line" churches that base much of their beliefs in a line in a chapter of a book of the Bible. The snake-handling Pentecostals are one of these, after a line of Mark (I think) that says you can handle snakes, poison d track, and some other things. There are aspects of the Mormon church, based on a line, almost insignificant, when it comes to your geneaological research. That all goes back to a statement of where Paul was asked, "Why are baptized for the dead?"
God does not care whether you are Methodist, Pentecostal, Baptist, Presbyterian, Church of God or whatever!
The Reformation began long before the nails of the 95 Theses on the door by Luther. I begin in the year 1100-1200 range heavy criticism when the Roman Catholic Church began to be published. Dante, highly critical of the church, was born in the 13th century. Erasmus also highly critical of the Church, lived in the 15th and 16th century and wrote prolifically before Luther's actions. It is said by some that Luther hatched the egg was laid by Erasmus. Neither Dante nor Erasmus requested a separation of the church, but suggested that the church return to its original state and give up some lessons from the things that the church has evolved over time. If you get the translation of Dante DeVine COMEDY by John Ciardi, the footnotes will tell you why Dante put certain people, like Hell, Purgatory, or Heaven. The work of Erasmus steadily to that end (in my opinion) ridiculous things such as the veneration of relics and the veneration of saints (which is where the prayers of the saints comes in concepts). Thomas More, Utopia fame, is a good friend of Erasmus and lost his head by his inability to make the Anglican Church. Luther and Erasmus in the communication to a point in the thinking of Luther Erasmus has taken things too far.
The theology is difficult to understand if you do not study theology and I will not enter into it. Trust me to accept that there are major differences in Luther, Calvin and Zwingli and theologies of the differences that will probably never be reconciled. I think if you look at the reform era, you will find that the two most influential were Zwingli and Calvin, Luther, but overall the cornerstone of the Reformation. Zwingli's original efforts were thwarted by a group, the Anabaptists, who quickly separated from Zwingli. All that means is Anabaptist "renamed" and the need to break those who joined them to be accepted into the church was renamed in his organization, his baptism in the Catholic Church was canceled. Very similar in many respects to the discussion between Peter and Paul in circumcizing.
Reform is not over! Upstarts like the Methodists, Mormons, 7th Day of the moves (and there are 7 days and 7th Day Adventist Baptist who have different beliefs), and the Jehovah's Wittnesses are proof that the Reformation still rolling.

So much to learn. Heard of 94 or 95 theses of Martin Luther in Germany? Heard of Calvin, Knox, the Huguenots, the Anabaptists, the Protestant Reformation?
I was raised Catholic. However, I must say I am a renegade, not so much by my own choice, but by the rigid practice of the Catholic clergy and laety today. I've become a Muslim because the Quran and traditional Islamic philosophy of the current account for some of the more advanced spiritual knowledge that can be achieved today.
Protestantism has most of its adherents is lost in the sauce. Most Protestants today do not know what they believe, nor are they able to live with Christ in his days and nights. They are, like many Catholics are hypocrites, or nearly so bad, they know little or nothing of Jesus or his teachings.
To learn, go ahead and visit some churches. Ask questions. Read. But most importantly, how to act when the Christians leave the church building, when not reading or talking about the Bible or the Church. See if you practice what you preach. Let him show the Christians, for themselves and their own opinion, what is Protestantism and Catholicism. Somehow, they are not so different. In other respects, are different: they are more Catholics and Jews who follow the Pope. Protestants are like businessmen who are jealous starry eyes for its chief executive (CEO). They make an idol of the Bible, Jesus represents caucasian looks like a hippie dream, a dream or Germanic man. God is angry with the control of a grandparent, or at best a great help charities, but the man in the sky, according to much of Christian thought.
I wish him well in his quest for this knowledge. May the Holy Spirit guide the search for discerning the truth of what is to follow Christ Jesus, whom Muslims call the Prophet Issa.

  5. David says:

This is a difficult but easy question to answer. Both Roman Catholics and Protestants believe in the Triune God: Father, Son (Jesus), Holy Spirit, according as the Triune God is the ultimate source of inspiration and guidance for Christian living. When the two is the emphasis the Bible in general, most Protestants have the Bible as authority in the Triune God, and other articles of Christian faith and that, again in general, most of the Catholics, while holding the Bible in high esteem, they argue that the Bishop of Rome, ie, the Holy Father, Pope, a direct descendant of the first Bishop of Rome was Peter, a disciple of Jesus, has more authority the Bible, as the bishop of Rome was established before the canonization of the Bible. Therefore, the Catholic Church gives more importance to the teaching Church: Pope issues encyclicals (sp?), Which was delivered to the bishops, was delivered to the priests and the laity are expected to follow. Most Protestants, on the other hand, the use of Martin Luther's "sola scriptura" maximum: just writing "rules" and "regulations" of the faith. This is a good question and I hope to continue their studies!

  6. lesroys says:

First, to clarify - Mary did not "get rid" of the Protestant faith in England. It ordered the execution of many of Protestantism, it was fairly strong ensconsed in England and Scotland before she was even born.
Moreover, the faith practiced his sister Elizabeth was technically Anglicanism, the religion founded by his father, who is more similar to other Catholic sects are Protestant. If you are American, I think Episcopal. They take communion and the Catholic practice of other rituals that other Protestants do not. Also, as Catholics, is an official "head" of the Church as having some divine right. In the case of Catholicism, the Pope, and in the case of Anglicanism is the English monarch.
The main difference between Catholics (and Anglicans) and Protestantism is the "intervention". In the Protestant faith, is not an intermediary between God and the common worship. This includes not only the "rights and divine powers of the Pope and the King, but also the power given to the priests to absolve sinners. There is no absolution in Protestantism, except repentance and the pursuit of faith. No man can absolve you of your sins in the Protestant faith, the concept is that Christ has given absolution through his sacrifice. Many early Christian sects like the Gnostics believed this, and they were destroyed by the Catholic Church for not supporting Paulian doctrine. It was not long before the major influence in the church came not from the teachings of Christ, but the pitfalls of wealth and power.
There are many other differences, but if you are a student of history as a former history teacher, I would just like to share with you some background on the Puritan movement. The Puritans were among the first Protestants and included Huguenots and Quakers, and now includes the Amish and the Mennonites. Puritans preached and practiced a strict moral code which focused on simplicity and the elimination of the excesses that marked the history of the Roman Catholic Church to that point. One of the reasons historians believe that the Puritan movement gained so much ground that emerged following the Great Plague in Europe. In short, people began to reject the Catholic Church when they realized they could not save them and not the Black Death. Ironically, not only caused many people to the way they practice their faith, but caused others to abandon religion altogether. The Age of Reason was the plague, as Agnosticism.

Protestants read the Bible and follow more or less …
Catholics believe in "god" of the pope and the saints canonized, and ignore the fact that Jesus said he came, in part, to eliminate the need for a priesthood.
Both Catholics and Protestants seem to know very little about the Bible they say is the "divine word of God," but Catholics seem to leave the reading and interpretation of the Bible to the "priesthood", which at the time of gospels had become corrupt and were condemned by Christ …
Catholics pray to saints, the Virgin Mary and the Protestant … just pray to God through Jesus, or Jesus … basically Catholics celebrate Christianized versions of ancient pagan religions, (San Dionisio?), but not advocating the Protestant faith, either .. . If you must believe in the God of garbage, and Protestants are closer to the Bible (I read the King James version 3 times …), but you are advised to read the so-called word of God, taking into account that it is from thousands of books and epistles, none of which were written by the man named Jesus … and see this movie first … http://www.thegodmovie.com/dvd. php
In reality, only reading the Bible as a whole was more than enough to convince me that Christianity is a danger to all humanity … Just because it has a cult of one billion members, does not mean its true … or even a cult …

Best short answer is that you go to Wikipedia.com and type of "reform" or "English Reformation" in the search box. What we now call the Roman Catholic Church was at one time the only established religion … Martin Luther in Germany [the 17th century, I think] was the first "reform" and he and his followers seceded from the Roman Church [they "protested" so we "Protestants"], and therefore The church became Lutheran. Henry VIII in England [the first Tudor], established the first Protestant church … English division outside Rome, and therefore the Church of England [in the U.S. version is called Episcopal]. His daughter, Mary Tudor, was a Catholic and tried to rid England of Protestants when they came to the throne. English is another king, a Protestant, after Mary Tudor, who decided that the Bible must be in English so everyone can read it [other than the priests, who could read Latin or Greek versions], and that is where we have the King James Bible. Look in Wikipedia for the right dates to the Protestant movement [Reformation] in Germany and in the same in England. "Protestant" basically means that every Christian church is not Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox [the Catholics of Byzantine rite]. Each of the churches is slightly different from the faith - but Luther was the first Protestant, and Henry VIII was the first Protestant English king. Roman Catholicism never rebuilt itself and its popes throughout the centuries, are all the same "chain of command 'after St. Peter, the first head of the first church.
