The priest could only acquittal if the man surrendered and confessed to the crimes. This would indicate true contrition, a prerequisite for forgiveness.
The seal of confession the priest prevents the disclosure of anything said during confession to anyone.
      With love in Christ.

The priest would do that for each confession:
Assume the confessor is truly repentant and absolve their sins.
That said, the absolution given by the priest is only valid if the confessor is honest in his request for forgiveness. Ultimately, it is God who forgives sin. Just because a dupe of a priest does not mean God has deceived.
Oath of secrecy when priests are hearing confessions. It is called the "Seal of the Sacrament." Nothing, not even a court order to compel a priest to disclose any information about the confession of anyone - ever.
This means that even if someone runs away to commit murder, but later repented. The murderer can ask for forgiveness in confession the priest and the sinner does not report to police.
That might not make sense, but thinking about it. If there is no "Seal of the Sacrament," which means confessors risk of having their sins become gossip among the parishioners. And then, no one would go to Confession. That's bad.
