Why do some Protestants believe that Catholics are not Christians?

I grew up my whole life, knowing that Catholics are Christians. All the history books, encyclopedias, etc. have said / implied to be so, and of course my catechism. My friends, most of whom are Presbyterian, had done the same. But then I get into a relationship with a Presbyterian who believes strongly that we are not Christians.
We have great differences, as the confession, but the fundamental beliefs of a Christian who professes faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior, and following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus?
She has many misconceptions of the Catholic religion as salvation is only through good deeds and the worship of Mary. It seems that some of his Bible study is teaching what the Catholics and other denominations believe. I, a Catholic, you know what you believe, and our beliefs are based on the life and teachings of Jesus.
But the main thing I want to know is: Why are some Protestants believe that Catholics are Christians, and others not?

  1. Pastor Billy says:

well, precisely because that is how it all started Protestantism. Without being too overwhelming for the Catholic religion would have little chance of the first fallen away Catholic attracting other Catholics to abandon the fullness of the Christian faith or else the point that anything less.
All anti-Catholicism, all bigotry, all demeaning, slander and disinformation is necessary to continue to keep the body of Christ to a separate Satan plays its part here. In the world of today, our separated brethren, and, of course, his Presbyterian friends to see it that way because it is truly embrassing to admit that to avoid any honest investigation of history. The great irony is that many Protestants as Jean Calvin first of which I am sure that his friends admire Presbyterian would be much more Catholic than Protestant in what today is Protestant.
Protestantism is still evolving and I am not referring to the fight in progress, but said what was true before.
Calvin taught eternal Virgin Mary Mother of God and even the doctrine of eternal virginity and the title of Mother of God were both denied by many today that say go figure reformed doctrine.
Ask your friend (s) to give evidence of precisely the teaching of the doctrine of works, for example, when the Catholic catechism does not say the doctrine of works? If it redirects you to the Bible and speaks of his faith shown in Santiago, where it says "faith alone will not save or Eph 2:10, which states" that are labor-God the purpose of good works. "
The problem with non-Catholics who hold this position against the works take the biblical text out of context. Often referred to Paul Romans or Ephesians or somewhere else and he is misquoted, as if all work is bad or not required for a Christian, when in fact Paul is speaking of works of the law as required under the first covenant people of Israel. But when Paul James, for example, or that I have written to you talk about the Bible works in other places are required of a Christian in the process of our salvation, and to discuss the works of love.
Your friend has taught biblical text out of context, your understanding is flawed because the poor of this framework.

I think those who believe that, I think there is only one way to be saved and that is through a recognition of our sinful state and repentance before God. They do not believe that one has to confess his sins to a man, but only to God. I, like humans, can not determine who is or is not a true believer and accepted by God.

  3. The Pope says:

I'm Presbyterian and I know that Catholics are Christians. There was never any doubt in my mind at all. I went to Catholic school as a young child, and Junior High and High School went to a Baptist one. I thought that if someone was not a Christan were Baptists. They were so hypocritical. Catholics never claimed to be perfect, he had a humility about them, and a genuine love for God and their faith. Baptists (who appeared to be more fundamentalist anything else) - and other Protestant denominations - were as ruthless, hypocritical, malicious and that surprised me. It's hard for me to listen to them Catholics criticize my class, so I stopped listening and began to speak. He told them they were wrong, and how dare to say and do these things.
It has been my understanding that if you believe in God, Jesus and Holy Spirit - which is the Trinity - that God sent his son Jesus to die for our sins, then you are a Christian.
I can not tell you why some believe that Catholics are not Christ's. I've heard so many things, from worshiping idols - with statues of Mary and Joseph in the churches, the use of the rosary. Condemn priests - they really are not so different from the preachers (unless they have taken a vow of celibacy). I think everyone wants to be the same, think the same things they do. They also say that Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons are not the Christan well - are simply different.
Sorry about this woman who has a strong belief system to think that Christians are not - and that members of their faith are not. Yes, you are right, belief in Jesus as savior is all that really matters. I hope this helps you in any way I can.

Print this and give to friends:
The way Catholics pray to Mary / Saints is not the same as the way to pray to God.
How Catholics "pray" to Mary is a form closer to a good Christian woman would send prayers to her husband died. It is obvious that her late husband has absolutely no religious significance, but that has personal meaning incredibly important.
Similarly, the saints are important in human form, not a religious form. The saints are important for example to live, and you can also ask a saint to pray for them.
Think about what would happen in a Presbyterian family, where a family member comes into a car accident. Each and every family member will pray for the person. To have a greater distance, I am sure that many people pray for those who need much further.
      Search the Hail Mary:
      Hail Mary, full of grace,
      the Lord is with thee;
      Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
      Holy Mary, Mother of God
      pray for us sinners,
now and in the hour of our death.
      Amen.
The first 2 lines to recognize Mary as someone who has received grace, something that I think every denomination given.
The 3rd line says she is blessed "among" women:
      Quote:
      2) We believe that Mary should be venerated among women not ABOVE women.
The 4th line says Jesus is blessed, something I think all Christians can agree on.
The last 3 lines of a request for intercession, the request for your prayers. Yes, all against their Protestant denomination / Saints praying for the sins of others, but it is a big difference. Small enough that it could be considered that a simple difference confessional.
The idea of challenging the Catholic Church in its non-Biblical beliefs is a bit silly, especially considering that basically all the schools of Christianity holds the belief in Creatio ex nihilo, which is not supported by the Bible .
      I hope this helps:)

  5. Barabas says:

Some Protestants. Particularly those in the southern states, fundamentalists believe that the only "true" or "Real" Christians. They believe that only go to heaven and that the whole world, and we really mean 'all' outside their Chuch goes to hell.

  6. That's so me says:

Well, I'm Protestant, and I think that any follower of Christ is a Christian;). I love the Catholics! Sometimes, not in this case, Catholics launch personal attacks on me, it had to happen to me once, but I went to the priest and told him that I was a Protestant control of his church and he convinced me that the church does not accept anyone, but the Catholics, and said that he was a Christian. Notice i still recognized him as a Christian.

  7. ? says:

I think that is because most Protestants believe only what is written in the Bible, and if you can not find a verse in the Bible to justify their beliefs about Christ, salvation, confession, or anything else, then it is simply be a good faith, but not biblical

  8. the guru says:

I see so many people asking why Christians do not see people in their faith as Christians (Catholics, Mormons, Muslims). I grew up in a church babtist, listening and speaking, half the people who claim to be evangelical Christians are not Christians. Do not feel as if not part of the Christian community if you are not considered Christians Christian. Most Christians are not considered Christians by others who claim to be Christians.

  9. moobaby0 says:

As a Catholic myself, his response is as good as mine. I have come to discover that many people do not consider Catholics as Christians, or any other kind of prejudice toward the Church, are ignorant. Even if you take a few minutes to explain the basic beliefs of the Church, and let them know that their religion is derived from our own, and I think that basically the same things (Christ died for us so we can go to heaven), to be more open the Church and ask more questions. I know several people who knew nothing of the Church. It took time to explain to them, and now they are devout Catholics! Let the Holy Spirit guides the answer anyones questions.

  10. shell answer man says:

God is not science … * Count for anything? There is no question of what anyone thinks. " Catholicism is a type of Christianity. It's really no belief. If you're talking to people that somehow their views on issues of fact that really needs to get to the bottom of this.

  11. budding author says:

The simple answer to your question is because the vast majority of Christians (Catholic inc) do not know what they need to believe in being a Christian, must be the most complicated and most incredible of religion in the world.
You could argue that all Christians were Catholics with the Pope as head of the United Church at first, but why argue, is a fact that Catholics are Christians and Christians were long before these upstarts never came on the scene .

  12. horse_lo says:

protostant but i am not the only difference is that I believe in chatholics good deeds to enter heaven, but I think they are Christians, in some way!

  13. Jedi for Christ says:

Trust me, I agree with their points all the way! It is simply the view of truth, and the things they have heard of Catholics from other people. I think that many people let others influence their opinions instead of finding the truth themselves.
      Jesus saves … Rock On!

  14. ? says:

Only people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior are Christians. Salvation is a gift to believers.

  15. jay says:

Do not worry your friend is not the first to listen to their parents instead of a preacher and studying the truth about a religion. Salvation by works you are asked if you know what these works are Catholic or she has to go ask your pastor in this regard. Many of these people are taught by parents must be close-minded and do not receive our religion, because they do not actually look at that, but these days I'm starting to realize that the majority of Protestants and Catholics but we do not judge belief that theres and worship the same God and only one … then theres those who continue to listen to false lies.

  16. azar_and says:

Mainly because the Church is focused on the Sacraments - Salvation is accomplished through the sacraments, rather than simply accepting the grace through faith. Add to that a lack of acceptance once saved, always saved, and that leaves a great void.
There were so many partings of the original, many people are unclear about what constitutes being Catholic. Much of what is taught only in Scripture is inspired, deriving most of tradition and dogma.
If you are Catholic, by denomination, Christian or not, can be discovered through the study of beliefs.

  17. ? says:

true Christians do not pray to Mother Mary and all the so-called saints. is wrong. which must be the only worship Jesus. Ive been to church before, and I know they do not agree iw / how to do things. think that priests can forgive them their sins too, and cannot. make up your own trash. no pergatory well, its heaven or hell, no sitting on the fence or go to your heaven or hell there is no other option. all their waste.

  18. Kimo says:

Orthodox Christians do not believe so.

  19. padwinle says:

There are Christians who are Catholics. There are Christians who are Protestant. If you believe that Jesus, Son of God, fully human, fully God, led a sinless life, was crucified, died and was buried, rose from the grave in victory over death for the atonement of their sins and have accepted his free gift of salvation, you are a Christian. The rest is window dressing.
I will say, however, there are some deep problems within the Catholic faith. Sacrifice of Jesus is all that is required for salvation or die in vain. If we can achieve our own salvation, his death would not have been necessary. Thus, baptism, while a great gift of God is not necessary for salvation (the thief on the cross next to Jesus was baptized). Communion, while a great blessing from God, it is not necessary for salvation. Confession to another human (priest) is not necessary, and no Bible - Jesus is the only advocate for sin. Praying to saints is not biblical - not only are people and God are not worthy of our worship, praise, or worship. They can not intercede for us with God. The Pope is not Christ on Earth or infallible.
      Peace.

Who says we do. I went to Protestant churches and all my life I have never heard a bad word about the Catholics and I have never heard that they were not Christians. I have grown to believe Catholics are Christians like me and so I've never heard anything different in the church. If I did know that in my church I would change my pastor of the churches, because it focuses on the wrong things.
