God does not answer the prayers on the grounds that it is prayer. God answers prayers based on whether they are asked according to His will (1 John 5:14-15). There is absolutely no basis or need to pray to anyone but God alone. There is no basis for asking those in heaven to pray for us. Only God can hear our prayers. Only God can answer our prayers. Nobody in the sky has greater access to the throne of God that we do through prayer (Hebrews 4:16).

Catholics refer to Mary as blessed because she was a woman blessed by God to lead the holy Child (Jesus) and also because she was a virgin when the Holy Spirit came to an end that could be a mother.

Because Catholics have a bit of a distorted vision of Mary. Blessed among women, so much. She has to give birth to Jesus. But it was only one woman.
