A priest is free to leave the church at any time. They just go to the bishop and inform him that wants to end his pastoral duties. Be involuntarily removed from the priesthood is a different matter. Once ordained orders are valid for life. The Church through a disciplinary process to prohibit the priest conducting the sacraments, but like the Baptism - once ordained always tidy.

Well, if he says, thanks but no thanks, that would be voluntary. You can walk. He has some hoops to jump through if he does not want to be excommunicated. If you had any faith left, probably had to jump through them, but was intensely bitter and had renounced their faith altogether, it may not. If he is "asked to leave" will be an investigation and a hearing before a tribunal. It is late and I can not remember what it is called when the priest is asked to leave, but if you go to Catholic Answers, I am sure we would be able to help.

Depends on what you decide to do. If you decide to renounce their belief in God and His holy Church, then you will be excommunicated and defrocked. If you opt to only quit smoking, over health, or family or personal reasons or any stress that comes with, he spoke with the bishop and given an indefinite sabbatical to deal with their problems.
