Having a bug that was not the Queen of England was used to. Mary Tudor (Mary I) was the first queen regnant of England (if we do not have Jane Gray). Matilda should have been the queen of the death of Henry I in 1135, but this was denied to her and her cousin Stephen of Blois seized the throne. Matilda became the son of Henry II. Henry was the first of the Plantagenets whose dynasty ended with the death of Richard III and the usurpation of the throne by Henry Tudor, Henry VII.
When Mary died, Elizabeth took the throne. She died before Mary of Scotland, technically, should have been Mary the queen, but I think that an accident had occurred on her and her son James had been installed as monarch - as it was later. The line should have gone that way as the last of the Plantagenets was removed by Henry VIII.

In fact, I believe that Mary was obliged to relinquish all claims to the English throne before being admitted into the country (where she was seeking sanctuary). His son James took up his claims.
Now, if Elizabeth had died before Mary, I think that Mary would have still fought tooth and nail to get the crown.

Mary became the Queen of England after her half brother Edward VI died. He was a Roman Catholic, Protestant and undid all the reforms introduced by his father Henry VIII and his brother. But when she died, her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth I became Queen and all these reforms REDID again Protestants.
Mary Queen of Scots was a Catholic queen of Scotland Protestant, and now by the rules of succession was to be the next Queen of England, where Elizabeth had died. But in those days, the rules are less clear, and there are also other things that matter.
Is unclear if the parliament or the noble, or the common people would have consented to become Mary Queen of Scots in England. The uncertainties are evident in the case of Lady Jane Gray, who was appointed as the next king by Edward VI in his will, but was deposed after nine days in favor of Mary I. Parliament's power in the matter is further shown by the deposition of a monarch in 1688, and his choice of another.
But while there has been a Church of England under a Protestant monarch for almost 450 years, there is still a significant proportion of its clergy and members would be as happy or even happier, if you suddenly became a Roman Catholic again .

Yes, it would have been the first Catholic monarch in the event that Elizabeth died. I wonder however, if the title of nobility which had been created by Mary Henry would stop uploading to the throne.

Mary (also known as "Bloody Mary", daughter of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon) came to the throne, as was the next in line after Edward (son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour) - Third line of Elizabeth.
Mary, Queen of Scots was the daughter of James V of Scotland and Marie de Guise
