The Swiss guards were Catholic, is a requirement.
Who have watched the Vatican for something like 500 years-a regiment was sent from Switzerland, and many of them died in defense of the Vatican when the Pope was attacked. To honor them, the Pope instituted the duty officer of the Vatican.
Are celebrating the 500th anniversary this year …. you should be able to Google and get some neat stuff.

I'm not sure you get the impression that the Swiss Guard are not "their own people."
All members of the Swiss Guard is and has always been Catholic.
One of the requirements of the Guard is to be Catholic men in good standing.
And yes, they really are Swiss.
All Swiss men are required to perform military service for life, and all healthy men in Switzerland are formally members of the army of that country.
As such, it has the largest number of Catholics eligible to draw the soldiers.
Guard are not just there for decoration or ceremony. They are not just Swiss soldiers, but soldiers specially trained in Switzerland. They are experts in martial arts, melee combat, any kind of conventional military weapons, and so on.

The papacy has possessed the body-the tutelage of Swiss Catholics in the fifteenth century. In 1505, at the behest of Cardinal Schinner Switzerland, the treaty was made by Julius II with the two cantons of Zurich and Lucerne, in accordance with which these cantons have constant supply of 250 men as a body guard to the Pope. Since that time there has always been on a body of Pope's Swiss guards.
Are responsible for protecting the sacred person of the Pope and the protection of the Apostolic Palaces, all exits from the palace of the city and the gateway to the papal apartments being entrusted to their care. We also have to assume their position at all pontifical functions in the papal chapel and all other religious functions inside and outside the Apostolic Palace (the latter is limited to San Pedro) will be attending the Pope.

taking into account the hierarchy of the Catholic Church is a political organization, does it surprise you that they do not trust their own people? look at the Patriot Act in the United States. Governments have never trusted his own people.

No, it's not about lack of confidence. It is presented as a tribute to old Switzerland had to pay the Catholic Church after a war
And I think that was a tradition

Swiss Guards have had a centuries-long reputation for loyalty and honesty. Supposedly can not be bribed or otherwise influenced
