To honor them, the Pope instituted the duty officer of the Vatican.   Are celebrating the 500th anniversary this year .... you should be able to Google and get some neat stuff. The Swiss guards were Catholic, is a requirement.

They are not just Swiss soldiers, but soldiers specially trained in Switzerland. They are experts in martial arts, melee combat, any kind of conventional military weapons, and so on.
