In general terms, how many people do what they actually follow the religion they swear they are dedicated to …?
A simple example from everyday life: Roman Catholic Church is strongly against the methods of birth control, but 86% of Italian (in Italy) who profess to be Catholics say they do not agree with the Church on the issue .
And I can think of hundreds of similar examples, but those same people who still claim to be "Catholic."
The same applies to all religions, basically.
I agree with you on that. However, today an excommunication is "handled with caution and regarded as a very serious issue and that may in any way endanger the Church and its authority. Some examples can be searched and are Emmanule miling Marcel Lefebvre.

I do not think she hates all Catholics, it is fair to wonder about the hypocrisy of calling yourself a "devout Roman Catholic," but support the killing of unborn children. By the same token, if Obama said he was Muslim, but ate ham sandwiches, do not you question your faith?
(I, for one, would love to put an end to speculation Muslim doing just that. Taking a bite from a big slice of pork.)

Frankly, why would that be different than for any of the Roman Catholics in Congress. None of them have been ex-communicated because of their votes? I think not. Congress makes the laws that you know, although the President has the power to veto if it reaches him.
The Pope does not seem to exert a great deal of political power in the government of the United States in the last 40 or 50 years.
