I feel a follow-up question waiting in the wings …
… But to answer this: Yes. And yes.
Great potatoes, potatoes mediocre pastoral potatoes, potatoes innovative establishment of the popes, Popes Pius, popes corrupt, weak potatoes, potatoes strong, all of them. Right back to Peter. In his question, I guess I also understand that, contrary to popular misconception, papal infallibility does not mean that a pope can not err.

Personally, I do not.
The Pope is still a man. The Church is still a creation of man. As such, remain subject to the failures of man.

When teaching on faith and morals, yes.
That does not mean that the Pope is perfect, or that he can not sin itself.

Papal infallibility was just made official in 1870, the Church has believed from the time of Saint Peter.
This comes from Jesus' words to Peter (the first Pope) and the apostles (the first bishops), "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 18:18) and "He who hears you hear me "(Luke 10:16).
The Catholic Church teaches that the Pope is infallible, sometimes narrowly defined.
The Pope is infallible only when, in union with the body of bishops, solemnly teaches that doctrine as truth. This is called "ex cathedra", which literally means in Latin "of the chair."
In others the pope can be as bad or sinful as you and I and be in need of forgiveness.

I was a Catholic of 15 years before being agnostic. I never thought a human being can be infallible.

The Holy Spirit given by Christ himself affirms the infallibility of the teaching of faith and morals, even if the pope is in sin.
