  1. Alan says:

Absolutely, unequivocally, idolatry. A 'serious' sin.
Catholics believe that rationalize away calling the practice "worship" - but the cult-worship is anyway you spell it.

  2. IAC2006 says:

I totally agree with what you said about prayer to them so they can pray for you.
I think it is a yes.we are not praying to anyone other than Jesus.
No one comes to the Father except through Jesus, therefore the sentence (in bold) Mary is the same as any other idols to pray with you cree Mary can link to God.
and isn't the reason we pray to Jesus because we believe it is the power on their behalf? therefore, the prayer to Mary to believe that his condition, his name will help to reach heaven by the prayers he received God's favor that wants to bless you?
Does it really work that way?
Jesus replied: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
      [John 14:6]

  3. sue says:

I do not think that prayer to Mary is the same as praying to an idol. WICCA Although I have been since 1982, I was raised Catholic.
Wiccans I know others have expressed their disagreement, but I see Mary as a Mother Goddess, and Goddess is a feminine aspect of the Divine Creator (God) - then the prayer to Mary is not the same as praying to an idol.

  4. lightnin says:

Worship or any other person other than God is wrong.
Therefore, "the prayer to Mary, in this sense, is incorrect.
But look for the word "pray." There are multiple meanings. One means "worship" other means "to ask" … "pray tell me the time" (British English).
When a Catholic pray to Mary, that person is asking Mary to join them in prayer to God. This is the same as if I ask you to pray for me … In this case, "prayed to" pray to God for me and me.
I adore you? Of course not. I would say that the WHO?
      Watch the dictionary:
"pray" means "ask", supplication, implorehttp: / / http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionar
Moreover, for "Protestant" issue. Check this out: http://whostartedyourchurch.com/

  5. IAC2006 says:

When Catholics - or someone - to pray to Mary - it is simply asking to pass along their thoughts to God. She is like a friend - but he is dead - and they believe she has a direct line to God to pray for her - and ask him to let God know what you need / want. Many Protestants ask their friends to pray for them. This is no different - except Mary is dead and in heaven - and if you are of Christian faith - who believe in heaven.
I do not believe in prayer to the way Christians and Catholics. My prayer is called "Mind Spritual treatment" - and it is not asking anything - just be grateful and involves using your brain to know that you have everything you need to achieve what you want.
And yet - I'm so tired of thinking of the Protestants that Catholics are doing something "wrong" when we pray to Mary.
      Namaste!

  6. liddabet says:

Wow. This is where Roman Catholics and Christians tend to part ways. Roman Catholics view Mary and prayers to the saints is not,. IE so they can pray in his name to the matter. (Y envoking their trials as a prisoner of God) The Christian vision can be seen from any of the above responses.

  7. Stranggo says:

Hindus believe in praying to any form of divinity that is most convenient. Maybe a woman feels more connected to Mary that Jesus, or a man can feel more connected to Jesus as a disciple of Jesus himself. Anyway, most of the Hindus offer prayers to God in different ways at the same time know the truth, unmanifested form of God. The real problem would be if the thought of Mary was the divine form of God, rather God is the essence of love. That would be true idoltry.

  8. Julian says:

I think your question is incorrect.
Roman Catholics and Christians pray to Jesus and Mary, very rarely to God. Through them to plead to God.
In the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the lines is "Holy Mother of God." How Mary can be seen as an idol?
There is no room for ego in any religious faith.

  9. aegispat says:

Absolutely. Catholics also pray to the so-called saints. They use holy water, how to become holy water? A man in a box can forgive their sins. To submit to the pope, treat it as deity. Even changed the 10 commandments. Removed the number 2. "not serious pictures," adding a second one about greed in the end. The Bible says that the only mediator between man and God is Jesus Christ.

  10. The Apostle says:

You know that Catholics are Christians, too, right?
Since Mary is a living being, I now live in heaven with God and His Son, Jesus, how to pray the same prayer to an idol?
What does the Bible say not to worship idols. Catholics do not worship Mary, who ask him to pray for us.
You ask friends and family to pray for you, right? So why is asking the most pure, most blessed person who ever lived to pray for you too?
People who say this are usually too simple to know the difference between the prayer of a person living in heaven compared to pray to a statue of her. Present company excepted, of course. Catholics know the difference between the person and the statue of the person.
To clear this elegant and company, here are some scriptures which refer to Mary the exalted status and role as advocate (someone to pray for you): Mt 1:20, Lk 1:28-30 , Lk 1:42 - 43, Lk 1:48, Lk 2:19, Lk 2:35, Jn 2:5, Jn 19:27, Acts 1:14, Rev. 12:1.
Swimmers: People who make a distinction between "Catholics" and "Christians", implying that Catholics are not Christians are just showing their own ignorance. Surely you do not want to appear ignorant to other people, right?
They are implying that they do not know the difference between the word "Protestant" and "Christians."
The definition of Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. Catholics follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Since the Catholic Church was the first of the original church founded by Jesus himself, since Protestants did not even exist until 1500, it is safe to say they are Christians. :) Check the dictionary and / or any encyclopedia doubt if that fact.
You know what a dictionary or a enclyclopedia is, right? You can find them at the library if you do not have one in your house.
Praying to Mary, since it is in heaven and not here on Earth, asking them to pray for you through their own prayer is the only way to talk to her. The only difference is geographical: my friends are here on earth, so I ask you to pray for me. Mary is in heaven, so I ask you to pray for me through prayer silently.
It is not really as complicated as protesters try to do what they must.

  11. Jon M dn ǝpıs sıɥʇ says:

    Yes, sort of …
You will see the prayer to Mary (actually MIRIAM)
is a side track I do not need to be in!
The mother of Christ and was very encouraged
is allowed to carry the Christ!
Now, fast forward 29 years or so ….
While these followers of Christ met
in the Cenacle, the mother of Christ
right along side of them. This is a very clear
indication that she was also the need of the blessing
only his son, Christ can offer.
      so they are correct.
MIRIAM not to pray the prayer with thanksgiving
Christ. Say the Word of God that dwells in the praises
      of its people …
Furthermore, say that Christ is God with us.
      So go!
Praise and worship and pray and Rejoice
      But just as you think
      Christ not only to Mom
      good question

  16. pugjw989 says:

No, Mary is our spiritual mother, and is, basically, talking with her. She guides us to Jesus if you ask, or are we heading in their direction. She has done much for us on how to intercede for us.

  24. mrzwink says:

To clear this for Catholics, the Bible is clear about worshiping God and praying to the only statue of a dead woman worshipping.Asking idol is a living person to pray that God is very different to pray to a dead person to intercept their God wants.

  25. elle says:

Yes, the same as praying to an idol. Praying to Jesus is also the same as praying to an idol.
