Besides its appearance, the mission of the Catholic Church is to proclaim and establish the Kingdom of God through Jesus Christ started among all peoples. The Church is trying to save souls.
Keeping the price of art available on the Vatican's confidence in all humanity to come, see, and inspire confidence in the Kingdom of God is part of the mission.
The Church might be able to raise a couple of million dollars by selling everything, but that will soon be gone and the world would be much better. Especially if humanity does not change for the better.
Both the Old and New Testament says that is the mission of all humanity (including you and me) to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. It is our work to end poverty and create justice and peace.
If every human on the planet then gave $ 10 $ 60 billion had been raised.
If one billion people in the richest countries gave $ 100 each $ 100 billion have been raised then.
Not only these riches that the Vatican art collections look miserable, this is only a fraction of what actually can be high if people have their priorities.
You and I and the rest of humanity could do much more to "help people" that the Vatican could in itself.
We must stop making excuses for our selfishness by pushing the blame on the Catholic Church.

Spoken like a true devil's advocate …. Now, here is the truth about the corrupt wealth of CRC ….. The Roman Catholic Church has many thousands of solid gold chalices kept in its churches around the world. Even the bloody cross of Christ has become the gold and studded with gems in reflection of the wealth of Rome. The Catholic Encyclopedia says: "The pectoral cross [suspended by a chain around the neck and chest more worn by abbots, bishops, archbishops, cardinals and the pope] should be adorned with gold and precious stones … … "(Ibid., p. 466).
Rome has practiced evil to collect your wealth for the "golden bowl" is full of abominations and filth. " Much of the wealth of the Roman Catholic Church was acquired through the confiscation of property of the unfortunate victims of Inquisition. Even the dead were exhumed to face trial and property was taken from their heirs by the Church. A historian writes:
"The punishment of the Inquisition did not cease when the victim was burned to ashes, or immured for life in the dungeons of the Inquisition. His relatives have been reduced to beggary by the law that all its property was confiscated. The system offered unlimited opportunities for loot. …
"This source of great benefit to the accounts of the revolting practice of what has been called` corpse-trials. "… That the practice of confiscating the property of condemned heretics was productive of many acts of extortion, corruption and rapacity was questioned by anyone who has some knowledge of human nature or historical documents. … Nobody was safe whose wealth might arouse cupidity, or whose independence might provoke revenge "(William Shaw Kerr, A Handbook of the Papacy, London: Marshall, Morgan & Scott, p. 241).
Most of Rome's wealth has been acquired through the sale of salvation. Untold billions of dollars have been paid to it by those who thought they were buying into the sky installation plan for themselves or their loved ones. The practice continues to this day - where Catholicism is evident in the control, less obviously here in the United States. There is no greater deception or abomination could be perpetrated. When Cardinal Cajetan, sixteenth-century Dominican scholar, complained about the sale of dispensations and indulgences, the Church hierarchy was indignant and accused him of wanting "to turn Rome into an uninhabited desert, to reduce the Papacy to impotence , to deprive the pope. .. the monetary resources necessary for the performance of their duties "(JH Ignaz von Dollinger, The Pope and the Council, London, 1869, pp. 307-08).
In addition to such perversions of the gospel that led to hundreds of millions on the wrong track, are abominations of the most corrupt banking practices, laundering of drug money, trading in counterfeit securities, and relations with the Mafia (fully documented in police records, and judicial), the Vatican and its representatives around the world working for a long time. Nino Lo Bello, former Business Week correspondent in Rome and Rome bureau chief of New York Journal of Commerce, writes that the Vatican is so closely allied with the Mafia in Italy that "… Many people believe that Sicily is not just … Vatican that a building "(Nino Lo Bello, The Vatican Empire, Trident Press, 1968, p. 167, see also David A. Yallop, on behalf of God, Bantam Books, 1984; Richard Hammers, The Vatican Connection, Penguin Books, 1983).
The Roman Catholic Church is by far the wealthiest institution on earth. Yes, a newspaper in Rome hears requests for money - persuasive appeals claiming that the Vatican can not remain in its limited budget and needs monetary assistance. Such motives are unthinkable stratagems. The value of the countless sculptures of such masters as Michelangelo, paintings by the world's greatest artists, and countless other art treasures and ancient documents which Rome possesses (not only the Vatican but in cathedrals around the world) is beyond calculation. At the World Synod of Bishops in Rome, Cardinal Heenan of England suggested that the Church sell some of these superfluous treasures and give the proceeds to the poor. His suggestion was not well received.
Christ and his disciples lived in poverty. He told his followers not to establish a treasure on this earth but in heaven. The Roman Catholic Church has disobeyed that order and has accumulated a plethora of riches without equal, "that the Roman Pontiff is the supreme administrator and steward. … "(James A. Coriden, Thomas J. Green, Donald E. Heintschel, eds., The Code of Canon Law, Paulist Press, 1985, Canon 1273). No church, no city is a spiritual entity, no religious institution past or present which even comes close to possessing the wealth of the Roman Catholic Church. A recent newspaper article described only a fraction of that treasure in one place:
"The fabulous treasure of Lourdes [France], whose existence was kept secret by the Catholic Church for 120 years, has been revealed. … Rumors have been circulating for decades about a priceless collection of gold chalices, diamond-studded crucifix [a far cry from the cross of blood on which Christ died], silver and precious stones donated by grateful pilgrims.
"After an indiscreet remark by his press spokesman this week, the Church authorities agreed to reveal part of the collection … [some] floor to ceiling cases were opened to reveal 59 solid gold brooches, many encrusted with precious stones.
"Most of the other hidden treasures of the" Crown "of Notre Dame de Lourdes, made by a goldsmith in Paris in 1876 and with diamonds.
