If we are a nation that does not promote any religion over another, why Obama Meeting with the Pope?

AP - Pope Benedict XVI highlighted the Church's opposition to abortion and stem cell research in his first meeting with President Barack Obama on Friday, the Vatican press the case with U.S. leader which is already under fire in some issues and conservative Catholic bishops back home.

    The Pope is the titular head of an independent principality, Vatican City.
      I think it's safe to say that in all likely hood more U.S. presidents have paid a courtesy visit to the Pope.

      1. Woodrow Wilson met with Pope Benedict XV in 1919.
      2. Dwight D. Eisenhower met with Pope John XXIII in 1959.
      3. John F. Kennedy met with Pope Paul VI in 1963
      4. Lyndon B. Johnson met with Pope Paul VI in 1967
      5. Richard M. Nixon met with Pope Paul VI in 1969 and 1970
      6. Gerald R. Ford met with Pope Paul VI in 1975.
      7. Jimmy Carter met with Pope John Paul II in 1980.
      8. Ronald Reagan met with Pope John Paul II in 1982 and 1987 and after leaving office.
      9. George H.W. Bush met with Pope John Paul II in 1989 and 1991. After leaving office to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II's.
