The Pope is the titular head of an independent principality, Vatican City.
I think it's safe to say that in all likely hood more U.S. presidents have paid a courtesy visit to the Pope.

You act like this is something new. President Obama is the 12th U.S. president to visit a Pope.
1. Woodrow Wilson met with Pope Benedict XV in 1919.
2. Dwight D. Eisenhower met with Pope John XXIII in 1959.
3. John F. Kennedy met with Pope Paul VI in 1963
4. Lyndon B. Johnson met with Pope Paul VI in 1967
5. Richard M. Nixon met with Pope Paul VI in 1969 and 1970
6. Gerald R. Ford met with Pope Paul VI in 1975.
7. Jimmy Carter met with Pope John Paul II in 1980.
8. Ronald Reagan met with Pope John Paul II in 1982 and 1987 and after leaving office.
9. George H.W. Bush met with Pope John Paul II in 1989 and 1991. After leaving office to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II's.
10. Bill Clinton met with Pope John Paul II in 1994. After leaving office to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II's.
11. George W. Bush met with Pope John Paul II in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Besides attending the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005, met with Pope Benedict XVI in 2007 and 2008.
