In terms of Christianity: I think I understand why so many "terrible things that have been committed in the name of God."?
As we all know: the 12 disciples were executed and therefore stopped the messages from God (miracles stopped, the Church of Jesus must be diluted with man made ideas). With the death of 12 disciples of Jesus and the Way, there was a great apostasy and the church of Jesus was damaged in the Catholic Church. For example: Jesus says, "have no other gods, except my father. Catholics pray to the Virgin Mary and a large number of saints (ie break the 1st commandment).
People who are turned off of Christianity see the negative things (the Spanish Inquisition, Salem Witch, also known as all the terrible things that happened in the name of our Father. These terrible events not by the sanction of God, but by man. I know of a church (except possibly Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses), where the principles of God and His son Jesus is still out. The Catholic Church is too high and that: "One, Holy, Catholic, the apostolic church. "The Church of Jesus Christ died with the executions of the 12 disciples.
Why people do not perform miracles, as they use too? The 12 disciples, by the power of the Holy Spirit, and the early followers of the Way.
A true Christian would be humble, merciful, a peacemaker, which condemns all wars and violence against any living being. That's what Jesus meant (endless love), compassion and mercy.

When I read his statement I have to ask if you know the result of such thinking. Do you realize that you are calling Jesus a liar when he said his Church would be a permanent church that would last until the Parousia. He said he would never fall into apostasy and that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. He said his Church is the pillar and foundation of truth. " If we are to believe that I can not believe. If one believes that they should believe that Jesus lied in the foundation of his Church, and was incompetent because he can not surely be the cornerstone of the disciples and the twelve stones, as they describe the foundation of a church built on sand and not on the firm foundation of the apostles. It also describes a church that has stopped teaching the truth after the foundation was laid by Jesus and the disciples and never was the base foundation of the Church as vernacular describes the construction of Christ.
Besides denying the divinity of our Lord and Savior and tarnish his name by suggesting through his lack of faith in His incarnation that He could not have been the perfect sacrifice prophesied.
These are the rantings of a false teacher lost in the doctrines of men. May the Lord have mercy.

You are confusing Christianity with Catholicism.

Everything is abracadabra. None of that is true. There are fairies in the sky.
Just because people do terrible things in God's name does not mean that God put his height. Do not they realize they are the screw ups and not God? How many times in the Bible was told by God that people were doing wrong? Sooooooo many times.
A lot of Christianity can become corrupted because of the false prophets and teachers and perversion of the Scriptures or parts of Scripture, leaving out. So definitely there are Christians who are corrupt. Even Jesus says: "Not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in thy name cast out demons in Your name perform many miracles? "And I will declare to them 'I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity. ''(Matthew 7:21-23)
Jesus performs miracles every day and I am witness to what no one can tell me otherwise. Jesus performs miracles in your life if you just ask Him to be in your life. People do not have because they do not.
