If a person is guilty of a crime and it is clear that his institution was not involved in the crime, it is clear that the institution can not be sued. However, many such crimes are tried as "institutional" crimes, where the institution believes that somehow the possible crime, through facilitation, if only by negligence. If authorities knew about the crime and did nothing to prevent it, or ignored the reports of the same, the entity may be judged guilty. Yes, this is the case of public schools, and - an entire district can be sued if he is guilty of negligence in connection with the murder of a teacher. In many cases, a Roman Catholic diocese is legally structured as a "single undertaking with the bishop as the person legally responsible for all its property, etc. that can be sued Bishop and his diocese as a whole (including all assets of the parish) may become liable.

Because the Diocese KNEW this was going on and shuffled the priests around to hide it. IF - If a teacher is abusing children in public school, and school moves around from one state to another that allows you to continue doing so, you can sue the school district.

A diocese is responsible when it is deliberately indifferent to actual or constructive knowledge of abuse, or try to hide it. Schools are a little different. It may be responsible in earlier theories, but also more directly in the theories of the agency.

Sexual abuse is bad. Yes, the priests of the diocese moved around to know about what they were doing. Schools could be sued if they knowingly allowed teachers to further contact with students after they discovered the teacher was a bully.
