The parish is a territorial unit usually headed by a local church. This administrative unit is typically found in Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian. Refers to a local church community or territory, including its main church building, perhaps one or more chapels of ease and other goods. In some countries the ecclesiastical parishes have become the basis of secular civil division, also called "parish" but more accurately described as civil parishes, a topic that is discussed separately.

Parish - Normally, in a diocese, a defined territorial division has been assigned its own church, to a particular group of believers, and its own distinct pastor who manages the care of souls. National parishes were also created to meet the needs of people of a certain race or nationality, without any relation with the territory. Sometimes vicariates subdivisions and apostolic prefectures are called quasi-parishes.

I've never heard of a parish church called, "until he became Catholic. Perhaps the parish of the word is used more by the Catholic Church.

Your question is strictly "What is meant by a parish" This is a geographical location.

A parish is also a geographic area government, similar to a county. In Louisiana, counties are not, they have parishes. In the Catholic Church, the people of a particular geographical area, they are supposed to attend church in this parish. The church attending is not a matter of personal preference, but a matter of where you live.
