Review

Holloway understands that if one is to speak to modern man about God, then he must begin by speaking to him about himself; but if one is to speak to him about himself, then he must begin, like John Paul II, with the fact that he is made in the image of God. The heart of liberal modernity is riven, because the fulfillment of its highest aspirations requires a view of the human being that its theories and its culture militate against. By explaining all of this, Holloway’s masterful book contributes to three necessary conversations — Christians with liberal modernists, Catholics with Protestants, and the present with the past. The chapter on the ambiguity of the American founding alone is worth the price of the book. –J. Budziszewski, University of Texas at Austin

In this excellent new book, Carson Holloway convincingly shows that the late Pope John Paul II was one of the most important political theorists and activists of the past century. In this well researched, carefully reasoned, and lucidly written study, Holloway explicates how John Paul II understood the true foundations of modern liberalism more profoundly than most liberal theorists have understood in theory what they have advocated in practice. In this lucid and insightful book, Carson Holloway brings political philosophy to bear on John Paul II’ s critique of liberal modernity. Holloway shows that the Polish Pope was neither a progressive; nor a reactionary but instead a proponent of true humanism rooted in the most august classical and Christian wisdom. This indefatigable defender of human liberty and dignity rejected the premises underlying ‘philosophical modernity’–materialism, hedonism, utilitarianism–precisely because they were incompatible with the truth about man –David Novak, J. Richard and Dororthy Shiff Professor of Jewish Studies, University of Toronto

In this lucid and insightful book, Carson Holloway brings political philosophy to bear on John Paul II’ s critique of liberal modernity. Mahoney, Professor of Political Science, Assumption College

Product Description

The passing of John Paul II provoked questions about the Pope, particularly in his relation to modernity. Was he opposed to the tenets of modernity, as some critics claimed? Or did he accommodate modernity in a way no Pope ever had, as his champions asserted? In The Way of Life, Carson Holloway examines the fundamental philosophers of modernity–from Hobbes to Toqueville–to suggest that John Paul II’s critique of modernity is intended not to reject, but to improve. Thus, claims Holloway, it is appropriate for liberal modernity to attend to the Pope’s thought, receiving it not as the attack of an enemy but as the criticism of a candid friend.

In other words, a Catholic, has a life changing visit to Mary to make your life happier and does nothing but good things for him, and then someone comes from a different faith is also experiencing a life changing religious experience beneficial, but a completely different God or Deity.
I know many examples of this, not just from reading this site, but generally speaking people … Many believers have had their faith confirmed by a religious dream, voices, or other similar experiences, but if this is the case … worldwide, with many different religions … all confirm their own beliefs … No doubt, someone has to be bad …
Would not the most logical solution is that everyone is wrong? What is a mass deception of the human experience on a large scale? If people want something enough, your subconscious can give … Any ideas?

Okay, so I invited the new pastor (his name is Dr. Poe and has a degree in comparative religion at Georgetown University. So not only some Nutter) Lutheran Church on Fourth Avenue. dinner at home with the hope of stimulating a philosophical discussion of the metaphysical nature of transcendental meditation on contemporary religious thought. I am an atheist, but I am always interested in ideas and beliefs of others and always treat them with respect is not always respond in kind. Some are very rude and abusive always telling about how I'm going to hell or otherwise, but that's the way it goes. Long story short, the Rev. pulls one of those who have a sudden headache and makes things extremely after dessert and while I'm washing until I realize that I am now short a salad fork, two tablespoons of soap and decor half bath off the living room. This happened after I had a Catholic priest last year in Santa Maria (two teaspoons of things (!) And a linen napkin) and have not been the same between us since then. I was hoping to start over with a new sect, ie, Lutheran, but now I'm not so sure. How should I handle this? I am dejected and reluctant to trust the most religious types.

I have often heard (and from what I've seen, it seems) that the prayer to Mary is an important part of their religion. Are there places (not necessarily in the church) where people sing to Mary, statues kiss her, or kneeling (or bow) in front of a statue of her (I guess this would be done while praying to it)? I've heard that happens, but you (as a Catholic) personally heard or seen this? What would you think that kind of behavior?
